Q. Are there fines?

Answer

Late items

Late fines were suspended during the pandemic but are reinstated as of July 1, 2021.

There is an overdue charge of 10 cents a day per item for the first 7 days and 20 cents a day per item following that, except:

  • videos, Views, and Launchpad tablets incur a charge of $1.00 per day per item
  • Storytime to Go kits incur a late charge of $5.00 per day

The maximum fine for most formats is $5.00 per item, with the exception of Storytime to Go kits' maximum fine of $25.00.

Damaged, lost, or long overdue items

We charge the standard list price for lost or damaged items. Patrons have the option of paying replacement costs or presenting an acceptable replacement copy for damaged items. Replacement copies must be in new condition and a newer edition if applicable. Unsuitable items may be declined for replacement.

All accounts more than 45 days past due are turned over to Unique Management Services who begin a gentle campaign of letters and phone calls. If the account is not resolved at that time, the company will begin secondary-placement services, which include extensive skip-tracing to find patrons who have moved. If the account is still not resolved after 120 days, the amount may be noted on their credit report as a last resort. Unique Management Services, Inc. of Jeffersonville, Indiana works with over 600 libraries in 40 states.
