Answer

Kindle usually refers to a dedicated e-reader with e-ink (black and white, like paper). If your device has a color screen, it is probably a Fire tablet.

Kindle format (for e-readers or Fire tablets)

You can borrow the library ebooks directly within the catalog, or from the library's OverDrive website.

OverDrive will give you a temporary license to read an ebook, but it has to be one that Amazon has in the Kindle format. When OverDrive connects to Amazon, it's like OverDrive says "Hey, this Kindle customer has permission to use this ebook for three weeks." Amazon sends the ebook to your Kindle, with an expiration date on your permission to read it.

Here's a help article with screenshots to show how it works.

Possible issues:

  • Amazon sends the ebook to the device (or Kindle app) registered to the Amazon account that is signed in at the time that the ebook is borrowed and claimed. If multiple Amazon accounts are accessed on a computer, check which Amazon account is signed in before you borrow the library ebook.
  • Your Kindle ereader needs a Wi-Fi connection to download library Kindle Books from Amazon. The download won't work over the mobile connection that Amazon uses to send you books that you buy.
  • OverDrive ebooks cannot be sent to Kindle outside of the USA.

Libby app (for Fire tablets)

The Libby app is available in the Amazon app store for installing on Fire tablets. You do not need the Libby app for reading library ebooks in the Kindle format, as explained above. You may choose to use it for audiobooks and for ebooks that are not offered in the Kindle format.

Of course, you may have reasons to choose the Libby app instead of the Kindle format for all your reading. With a Fire tablet, you can choose the reading experience you like best.
